Jon Garate, was born, raised, and lived among pioneers, homesteaders, cowboys, and other characters of the Old West. The Madeline Plains, which provided the unique experience that formed the uniqueness of character of this author, story-teller, and fillyosofer, is in a very, very remote area of northeast California. It is a hard, harsh high desert mountain country where, according to the author’s father, “. . .about the only thing you could raise was dust, hell, and kids”. But some families, including the Garates succeeded in raising some cattle and sheep for 4 generations on the family homesteads in the far reaches of northeastern California.
All of Jon’s writings come out of the roots of the pioneer world of America. Laced with humor, insight, and experience that comes from generations of scratching a living out of some of the world’s harshest environments, these books will have you laughing out loud, and have you yearning for a simpler, more rewarding, more basic life. Hopefully you will be inspired to make a few changes in your life and get back to a few of the roots of your own pioneer ancestry.
Jon’s education consists of an MM Degree (Master of Mediocrity) from OCSHK (Old Cowboy School of Hark Knocks), where he learned to ride with the old time cowboys, and drove a team of horses and wagon before learning to drive an automobile. He attended 8 years in a one room school, 4 years of high school, and earned a BA degree in Industrial Arts from CSU.
